  3. I have sent my daughter at least twice, if not more, into Lishkas Hosofer to get my son his Gamura! What's the big deal if a girl is on the Boro Park bus with a Sefer? Is she for real? She knows it, she just wants the readers to KNOW she's NUTS!

  4. Why would a Satmar person have a problem with the Talmud?? Deborah, I hope you're reading this because I don't know what you were or weren't subjected to growing up but let me tell you, you threw the baby out with the bathwater!!! If you weren’t happy being Satmar you could have kept the beautiful parts without throwing it all away!! Plenty of happy Jewish religious people who don’t live with all the Satmar restrictions and go to college and have great jobs and great lives and happy homes filled with the joy and laughter of lots of yummy kids. This video almost made me cry – this is what you threw away! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KxEeL-HcIY

  7. Before my facebook page closes down for good, which is immanent, being that it takes 14 days to do so, I would like to end off with a few words. After reading all of the many posts for and against Deborah/Suri and walking around, watching everyone shop for Purim, and wondering, are the Chassidik Frum families even aware of this woman's existence, do they know that she wrote a stupid "novel"? The answer is NO! Thousands upon thousands of Frum people, Chassidish and just regular Orthodox Yiden, all over the world, have know idea that there was even book written, and they don't care either. She is not the first OTD who has done such a thing and she won't be the last, and it should NOT have any type of influence over anyone, in any way, because we are, after all, Frum Yidden by choice (I hope), and just because someone has their "opinion" about something doesn't make it OUR opinion. She can eat Treif, not keep Shabbos, and wear what ever she wants, it has no baring on the beauty of Yiddishkiet, and we should not have to defend any of OUR beliefs to anyone. Being Frum has many levels, and if someone is not comfortable with the level they are at, then change, up or down, to a level YOU feel you can handle truthfully. But giving up Everything is a "cop-out", and it means that they have no interest in working on themselves. Please pass this message on to ALL of your friends who are shocked and broken over Deborah Feldman's "book", or even the friends who think that these type of people will affect the Frum world. Let me remind you that 75-80 percent of the Frum and Ultra Frum people, all over the world, DON'T care what an Ugerfuriner (OTD) woman has to say anyway, they/we are much too busy preparing for Pesach! Chag Sameach everyone!

  9. Me thinks you doth protest too much. All of your moaning and groaning and constant accusations only reinforce the stereotypes which Conservative Jews like myself think about you: hypocritical, pompous and holier than thou. Literally. You can argue the details of Unorthodox all you want but you only reinforce the beliefs the rest of us have about you.

  10. No Elroy. I don't feel the orthodox, frum, satmar community is saying anything wrong. I feel the book gave alot of description for her early life but when talking about why she left, what happened, she rushed over. Everyone is entitled to live the lifestyle, culture and religion they want and I feel Deborah being abje to write a book is utterly ridiculous. Just because she came from a broken home doesn't give her the right to bash a whole community.

    1. I agree, I wanted more info on her changeover, whether or not she still keeps in touch, whether Eli sees Yitzy. Didnt she say in cases like this the father keeps the child? FWIW I didnt think the Satmar community was bashed. She may have embellished things a bit but all deeply religous communities are by nature restrictive. I liked the book.

    2. Also I feel she said many positive things about growing up Satmar. fyi I am Jewish, although not particularly observant. I loved learning about some of the rituals.

  12. Being open minded enough and willing to learn can be a really big green flag for me. Sometimes it's more rewarding to be the person who taught your partner why opening up and communicating is such an awesome thing.

  13. I'm willing to bet that all the posters here are from the NY-NJ Jewish world. My philosophy is that any geographical area whose prison system has a daf-yomi shiur, is not a place to raise Jewish children. The foul corruption that runs through those communities causes an ugliness of soul that I came to learn about in yeshivos full of NY-NJers and their bigotry, racism, lack of education and empathy, and disdain for what they don't understand; and those bachurim and girls go on to procreate more of the same, and each generation adds to that an increasing contempt for non-Torah education. What has become of a nation that was once known for being the most educated amongst those around it? This list of mean spirited posts is evidence of those who know the slogans and wear the right uniform but just miss the point; and no doubt will go on to learn or talk about mussar and not even put it together. What a waste.

Would you want to create a religion? No problem: some dollars, a lot of imagination and is done! Autobiographic tale of my twenty years in the Korean unifying movement of the self-styled “messiah + reverend” Sun Myung Moon, the Unification Church! Very active in the richest countries in the world. A recognition in the language denoted of plagiarism and self plagiarism, that characterize the interpersonal transaction in the mystical micro-cults. Strategies “no profit” to recycle a remarkable huge amount of money, deriving by philanthropic fundraising, in normal activities “full profit”. The secrets of the fundraising and sales “door to door”. Entirely transposed by my time in the more articulate, picturesque mystical enterprise of the history: the Moon’s sect or... the cleverest fraud of the history! An economic empire built on the fundraising, making the whole world believing of feeding nagger kids and not doing that even to one of them... An amusing narration, that unfortunately it pertains to one of the most ruinous evil of our time: the impoverishing speculation on the money in purpose of mere acquisition, without producing anything’s for the common benefit! For a limited period, will be available at 1.99 $

  16. Mrs. Feldman,
I promise I have a case that interests the public if you know how to present it.
I filed a big lawsuit against Rutgers University In New Jersey claiming corruption, abuse of power, and discrimination.
I'm looking for a well known journalist like you to publish the case ASAP to put more pressure on this horrible gang and enlighten the public about their crimes.
Please remember: "What helps evil to prevail is good people doing nothing".
The case is in the Superior Court and I have tons of documents that condemn everybody including the dean of dental school, the office of employment equity, the office of ethics, and the whole administration that may include the president of the University Dr. Barchi himself.
Can you imagine 75% of postgraduate students are brought from India by F1 visa with absolute zero knowledge in dentistry and without passing any basic requirement exam like NDBE part 1!!! Can you imagine they don't know what "Alginate impression material" is rather than knowing how to use it, and when they saw an X-ray of a ready-made post, they asked is that was an implant, while thousands of well qualified green-card holders and US citizens dentists are denied opportunities regardless their qualifications. This is only the tip of the iceberg. I cannot explain everything in one message.
Please call my attorney Julie Warshaw cell: 9086128461/ Office: 9734332121. or email her at:jwarshaw@warshawlawfirm.com
I'm available anytime to show what I have to the press. My Cell: 9737476425
If you are not interested, at least reply to my email and refer me to the journalist who covers this. Please DO NOT ignore this message, It's absolutely important.
    Thank you.

    1. They are not inhumane. That's absurd. The way of life isn't for everybody. But for most raised in it, it's as good or better as anything else.

  19. She is trying to impress goyim by employing their literary turns of phrase and modeling their sagas. But it's fantasy. The man in the store wasn't bothered by anything she did. I can't imagine any bookstore owner in any Jewish store minding a woman buying a volume of Talmud. She's making up a cause, because you got to have a cause or what kind of liberal are you? Outrage is the religion.

  20. All of the comments serve only to make Deborah Feldman's story more believable. What is barely believable to me is how this cult continues to thrive in the US. This is beyond Judaism; it is a cult.
