Deborah Feldman's Public School Education

Once upon a time a Hasidic father couldn't afford to pay tuition, so he did what he thought was right and he sent his daughter to public school.

That's right, Devoiry Berkowitz AKA Deborah Feldman went to public school because her father couldn't pay for Satmar to educate her.

Many people in Williamsburg were saddened when Mr. Berkowitz sent his daughter to public school and they tried to raise the funds to get her out of the non-Jewish school system.

Now, this con-artist Deborah claims that she went to Satmar schools, didn't know who Barbara Walters is, didn't get more than a 4th grade education and wants us to believe that she was accepted to Sarah Lawrence College without a GDP GED. (Oops, an embarrassing typo.)

Insulting intelligence at its worst!

Update: I'm trying to find out more details who was responsible for sending Deborah to public school.

Update II: We were able to confirm that Deborah spent most of her youth outside of Satmar Schools. She went to public school for a couple of years and went to the less-strict Vien school for some other years.

Update III: A reader comments:
Stating a fact. Suri Berkowitz ( Deborah Feldmam) went to vein school up until the third grade. She came into satmar school in the seventh or eighth grade........ Rumor has it tha between these two schools she went to a school in manhattan where her mom sent her
Update IV: Confirmed through many sources: Deborah Feldman came into Satmar only in September 1997 when she was already 12 or 13 years of age. She spent not more than four years of her youth in a Satmar school. She omitted this information from her book. This is a very serious issue, taking in consideration that she is making outrageous claims about how ignorant she was because of her Satmar education.

Another reader comments:
I used to live on The Lower East Side where my daughter's attended Bais Yaakov there. I remember Sarah'la Berkowitz aka Deborah Feldman also went to that school. I remember seeing her mother bring there on several occasions as well.

  1. Proof anyone? I don't believe she went to public school. Satmar doesn't turn down anyone because of tuition. Besides which she was not raised by her father. Let's stick to the truth here.

    1. I heard this from very reliable sources. I'm doing more research now. One thing I confirmed without a doubt is that she didn't attend Satmar schools for most of her youth. If the info turns out to be wrong I will remove it.

  4. GOP is the Republican Party.
I saw you corrected it to GED.
For a second I thought you meant GPA...
(there are plenty of acronyms that begin with G)

  5. How do you know she was accepted to SLC without a GED?
Are you sure she didn't obtain one prior?

    1. Actually I am sure that she did obtain one. Deborah wants us to believe otherwise. She either thinks that we are stupid enough to believe her or she is herself not very smart.

    3. RS, you didn't answer my first question: "HOW".
Did she write about it in the book? (re: "she wants us to believe")

  6. Another fact, she'll have you believe that her parents devorced in her early childhood when in fact she was already an adult when that happened.

  8. Can somebody verify if this Sarah'la Berkowitz is possibly a sister of Devoiry aka Deborah?
As a former neighbor living on the same block as her father and grand parents I remember for sure he sent his kid/s to Manhattan in some school but my wife claims they where 2 sisters (sorry I don't keep track of all kids on my block, it was also quite a while ago)

  9. No, Sarah'la and Deborah are the same person. She was an only child. And I remember her mother bringing her to school. I verified it with someone who works in the school.

    1. So apparently there is a machloikes as to whether she was an only child or not.
According to UrbanMother (above), "Sarah'la and Deborah are the same person. She was an only child."
And according to lower east sider (below), "sarala's sister riki went to public school, not sara'la"
So is CR, who claims the sister had a different name....

Figure it out when you reach a consensus and start the "exposures" from scratch...

  10. i know sara'la berkowitz aka deborah feldman since she entered bais yaakov of the lower east side in fourth-grade. i was the designated person to take her to and from school every day. i can write a whole book about sara'la's lies, fernagleling, and deceptions from 4-7th grades.

firstly, she was kicked out of vien in third grade, her mother was going to put her into public school for lack of better idea. Her aunt, Mrs. Berkovic, principal of Satmar school, called me to to find out about the school, byles. in september of 4th grade she started out there. I met her every morning for the first 2 weeks and we went to school together.

after 2 weeks, she told me her mom said it's ok for her to take the B39 by herself, she kept telling her mom that i was still accompanying her.

secondly, the only reason why she left byles is because she was educating all the girls in the class about christianity and marriage intimacy.

  11. sarala's sister riki went to public school, not sara'la. Her mother sent her there, because from what i remember she was hearing-impaired. riki now attends BYA.

they are only 2 children in the family. sara'la and riki.

sarala had really good friends on the east side. the seidenberg family almost adopted her, she was there a couple of times a week, sleeping over.

  12. The sister's name is Shira (not Riki). Shira is currently attending a Jewish school in Flatbush. At one point Shira did attend public school. Surale (aka Deborah) went to Vien-Williamsburg then Bais Yakov-Lower East Side and only afterwards did she go to Satmar-Williamsburg.

  13. Isn't her grandfather, Bernard Berkovics, the accountant? His photograph looked familiar, and given that Deborah Feldman is actually Deborah Berkovics, the connection seems inescapable. Any answers?
